Wonder What Happens at a Toastmasters Meeting?

We pack a lot into our 60 minute Thursday meetings. Here’s a summarized format:

Opening

Our club president will open the meeting with inspiration and important announcements. Any guests will be welcomed and asked to briefly introduce themselves. Following this, the current week’s Toastmaster will be introduced to conduct the rest of the meeting.

Member Speeches

The first major portion of our meeting is hearing 2-3 prepared speeches from our members. These speeches will typically be 5-7 minutes on a subject of the member’s choosing, but will usually have specific objectives defined by the Toastmasters curriculum.

Table Topics

This is the impromptu speaking portion of our meeting. We encourage all members and guests to participate. Volunteers will be given a question or prompt, and will attempt to deliver a 1-2 minute speech on that subject!

Member Speech Evaluation

Pre-selected members will deliver brief, 2-3 minute evaluations on the prepared speeches that were given at the start of the meeting. The evaluator will deliver both positive and developmental feedback on what the speaker did well, and where they might improve. Many Toastmasters agree that this is one of the most valuable portions of the meeting – both for the speaker and the evaluator.

Winners announced & Meeting close

While Toastmasters is not an overly-competitive environment, there is value in having your delivery compared to your peers. A single winner will be voted on for each of the three portions of our meeting outlined above: best speaker, best table topics speaker, and best evaluator.

Finally, the Toastmaster will turn the meeting back over to the Club President for any further announcements or to bring up matters of club business. Guests may also be asked what they thought of the meeting.
